Mari Teigen

About

Teigen is a research professor and director of CORE – Centre for Research on Gender Equality at the Institute for Social Research in Oslo, Norway. Her research focuses on conditions for gender equality change, particularly in relation to the structural, institutional, and political aspects, involving the study of adoption, implementation, and impact of gender equality policies. A key aim is to understand and explain shifts and stability in gender relations. She has conducted extensive research on the development of Norwegian and Nordic equality policies, including initiatives like gender quotas for corporate boards, and their ripple effects; the consequences of the strengthening of the activity and reporting duties in the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act, as well as the shift from a unilateral emphasis on gender equality to a multidimensional and intersectional approach; equal-pay policies, etc. Another key focus has been attitudinal changes and variations across social groups, as well as exploring the distance and proximity in attitudes towards equality between elite and the general population. In addition, she engages with stakeholders and dissemination of research to the public. She is frequently invited to lecture both nationally and internationally and regularly contribute to media outlets through columns and interviews. She serves on various boards and committees at the national and international levels, including her roles as co-editor/editorial board member for the Nordic Journal of Working-Life Studies and Comparative Social Research and as a former editor of the Norwegian Journal for Gender Research. She was member of the government commission on gender equality.
